Sulzer’s EvapCare-S short path evaporator sets a new standard in low-pressure evaporation technology, made possible by its ingenious internal design. Understanding its key features can help industries maximize product purity and process efficiency.
Vertical Condenser Inside the Evaporation Chamber
One of the hallmarks of EvapCare-S is the vertical condenser placed inside the wiped film evaporation chamber. This design minimizes the distance that vapors travel before condensation, reducing pressure drop across the system to very low levels—enabling evaporation at pressures down to 0.01 mbar (1 Pa).
Mechanical Agitation for Uniform Film Formation
Like Sulzer’s EvapCare-W, the evaporator uses a rotor to create and maintain a thin film of liquid on the heated wall. The rotor’s continuous agitation prevents fouling and ensures uniform heat transfer on the film, promoting efficient evaporation without dead zones.
Distillate and Concentrate Flow Paths
Vapors generated on the heated film migrate to the central condenser where they condense and flow down special tubes exiting via the bottom nozzle as distillate. The concentrated liquid fraction collects at the bottom of the shell and is withdrawn laterally as the concentrate ensuring clear separation and easy handling.
Minimizing Thermal Stress and Efficiency Gains
This short distance between heating and condensing surfaces, combined with mechanical wiping and vacuum operation, results in short residence times and very low liquid hold-up. These features are critical to maintaining the integrity of heat-sensitive products and processes with high boiling components.
