Advanced HEFA Process Technology for Low-Carbon Fuels
Renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) are at the forefront of the global energy transition, offering scalable, drop-in alternatives to fossil-based transportation fuels. Using the Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) pathway, lipid-based feedstocks such as waste oils, fats, and greases can be converted into premium-quality fuels that meet the most stringent global specifications.
Sulzer delivers high-efficiency process technologies that enable producers to manufacture renewable diesel and SAF with low carbon intensity, high yields, and competitive economics. From early project development to commercial operation, our solutions support fast deployment, operational stability, and long-term profitability.

Navigating the complexities of bio-based separation
High yields of renewable diesel and SAF
Optional pretreatment technology allowing processing of highly contaminated feedstocks
Liquid-full reactor design for superior process control and catalyst life
Lowest total cost of production and fast payback, typically under three years
Sulzer’s approach to bioethanol purification is built on decades of process engineering expertise and a deep understanding of separation challenges. Our systems are designed not only for performance but also for adaptability capable of handling diverse feedstocks and evolving purity requirements. Whether upgrading fuel-grade ethanol to pharma-grade, integrating into existing infrastructure, or deploying new modular units, Sulzer ensures smooth implementation, operational reliability, and long-term value.
With a focus on innovation, we continue to push boundaries in energy efficiency, process electrification, and sustainable production.
Renewable Diesel & SAF – Efficient Conversion of Renewable Feedstocks
Renewable diesel and SAF production via HEFA involves hydrotreating biogenic oils and fats to remove oxygen, saturate hydrocarbons, and produce paraffinic fuels. Compared to conventional biodiesel, renewable diesel and SAF exhibit superior fuel properties, including full compatibility with existing infrastructure, and lower lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions.
Feedstock Variability & Quality
Waste-derived and biogenic feedstocks often contain contaminants and exhibit wide compositional variability. Sulzer technologies are designed to handle diverse lipid feeds, including used cooking oil (UCO), animal fats, tallow, and distillers corn oil (DCO), without sacrificing performance.
Reactor Control
Advanced liquid-full reactor designs and integrated hydrogen management reduce operational risk and improve overall efficiency.
Economics & Speed to Market
With tight project timelines and capital discipline essential, Sulzer enables rapid project execution (< 24 months) and attractive payback periods through modular concepts, optimized equipment design, and reduced total cost of ownership.
