zeroBOG™: Efficient LNG Boil-Off Gas (BOG) Recondensation Technology

Sulzer’s zeroBOG is an advanced LNG recondensation technology designed to efficiently recover and reuse boil-off gas (BOG) during LNG transport and terminal operations. Engineered for compactness and reliability, zeroBOG™ enables total recondensation with proven performance across marine and offshore applications.

Compact & Reduced Investment

Up to 5 times smaller than traditional units, saving space and reducing costs

Fast & Flexible Installation

Modular design allows fast assembly on new or existing vessels

Easy, Reliable Operation

Self-regulating system ensures efficient performance with minimal effort

Main Benefits

Compact and reduced investment costs: zeroBOG design is typically 5 times smaller than traditional BOG recondensers

Fast installation: supplied as a modular solution allows for quick assembly and seamless installation on new ships or during retrofit of existing vessels

Ease of Operation: the self-regulating system and simplified control scheme make the unit easy to operate

Key Characteristics

Compact inline condensation system: offering high operational stability and flexibility for typically non-stable BOG flow rates

Lowest pressure drop <0.5 bar: making it less sensitive to tilt and motion conditions, ideal for offshore applications such as floating storage and regasification units (FSRU)

Minimal design margin requirements: use of Sulzer’s proprietary internals design minimizes the margins used to compensate for maldistribution of liquid and gas in offshore applications

recondensation at sea

Overview

Since 2012, zeroBOG™, Sulzer's compact BOG recondenser approach utilizes liquid LNG as continuous phase. This enables minimal liquid hold-up, robust performance across varying load conditions, and enhanced tolerances to liquid and gas, maldistribution during marine transport.

  • Sulzer zeroBOG is a compact and highly efficient boil-off gas (BOG) recondensation technology designed for onshore and offshore LNG applications as well as other cryogenic fluids. It works by recondensing the BOG generated during the transport, offloading, and storage of liquefied natural gas (LNG), ensuring complete and reliable recondensation even under fluctuating process conditions such as varying BOG flow rates or maldistribution of liquid and gas.

  • zeroBOG offers several key advantages:

    • Compact design: It is typically five times smaller than traditional packed-bed tower BOG recondensers, saving space and reducing weight.

    • Fast installation: Delivered as a modular solution, it allows for quick and seamless installation on both new ships and retrofits.

    • Ease of operation: The self-regulating system and simplified control scheme make it easy to operate and maintain.

  • zeroBOG is designed primarily for the shipping and maritime industry, especially for LNG carriers, FSRUs (Floating Storage and Regasification Units), FPSOs (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading units), and LNG refueling stations and terminals. It is also suitable for other cryogenic applications such as Bio-LNG fuel systems, liquid hydrogen (H₂) systems and liquid methane for rocket fuel.

  • zeroBOG supports the IMO’s 2023 greenhouse gas emissions reduction strategy by enabling efficient recondensation of boil-off gas (BOG), ensuring complete condensation even under fluctuating conditions.
Minimizing methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas, reduces the carbon footprint of LNG carriers, LNG fueled ships, and terminals.

  • zeroBOG is suitable for both new installations and retrofitting existing vessels. Its modular design allows for quick assembly and seamless integration into current LNG systems, making it a flexible solution for upgrading older ships as well as equipping new builds.

  • Sulzer Chemtech is recognized for providing the most advanced modular LNG process solutions across Europe. Their focus on highly engineered, compact systems ensures faster deployment and reduced capital expenditure, offering superior long-term efficiency compared to traditional bulk suppliers.
