Sulzer Reaction Technologies
Leveraging the deep expertise in separation technologies, Sulzer offers integrated reaction solutions tailored to essential industries from petrochemicals to specialty chemicals, but even to cosmetics. Built on our proprietary technologies including reactive distillation and advanced static mixing, we design processes with optimized product purity and process economics.
Sulzer reaction technology
Sulzer offers two cornerstone reaction technology platforms: (1) Reactive distillation and (2) Enhanced mixing reaction.
(1) The former technology is established on the extensive know-how in combining reaction and separation into a single operational unit. The classical examples are alkyl acetate and butyl acetate production in petrochemical industry or Iso-propyl palmitate/myristate (IPP/IPM) in cosmetic industry.
(2) The latter platform is about integrating static mixing reactor and advanced purification steps as end-to-end solution. This technology is particularly helpful when explosive or hazardous reactants like ethylene oxide and ammonia are involved in a highly exothermic process. The great examples are the production of ethanolamines, specialty amines, and glycol ethers.

Sulzer’s reaction technology platforms deliver transformative value across a wide range of industries, including petrochemicals, fine and specialty chemicals, cosmetics, and nutraceuticals. Our solutions are not limited to chemical synthesis—they also play a crucial role in waste management and solvent recovery. Reactive treatment of waste streams, for instance, enable more efficient and feasible downstream purification, ultimately saving CAPEX and OPEX.
What sets Sulzer apart is our capability to seamlessly integrate reaction and separation technologies. Our offering is especially beneficial when downstream separation is challenging or critical to product quality.
With our tailored and high-performance solutions, we simplify processes, maximize product purity, and enhance overall efficiency for our customers.
Beyond technology integration, Sulzer substantiates ourselves by offering scope of supply from feasibility studies and pilot testing. Our deep expertise in experimental design and scale-up enables us to transform customer ideas into tangible pilot trials — covering both reaction and separation processes. Ultimately, the real data and engineering rigor will back our end-to-end solutions, ensuring reliability and confidence at every stage of development.
Yes, Sulzer’s reaction technology is highly adaptable and can be integrated into existing process infrastructures. While many of our solutions are implemented in new plants, we also have proven references demonstrating successful revamps and expansions of existing facilities.
For example, Sulzer’s reactive distillation technology can be retrofitted using KatapakTM structured catalytic packings, which enhance yield and reduce recycle streams by combining reaction and separation in a single column. This approach is particularly effective in processes such as alkyl acetate production, where switching between different acetate variants can be achieved through targeted redesign.
Additionally, Sulzer’s static mixer platforms have enabled the transformation of existing ethanolamine plants into glycol ether production units. These mixers offer high heat transfer efficiency and narrow residence time distribution, making them ideal for continuous chemical reactions.
